Dr Stefan Williamson Fa obtained his PhD in Social Anthropology from University College London in 2019. Following his doctoral studies, he has held esteemed research positions at the University of Birmingham, Lund University, and the University of Oxford. He has an MA (Hons) in Social Anthropology from University of Edinburgh and a MMus in Ethnomusicology from SOAS, University of London.
Specializing in the intricate interplay of religion, culture, and politics in the Middle East and Caucasus, Stefan has conducted extensive fieldwork in Turkey, Iran, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. His research has been published in high-ranking anthropology and interdisciplinary journals, showcasing his expertise in the field. He has actively contributed to the academic community by presenting at and organizing international conferences and workshops.
Beyond academia, Stefan is deeply involved in the arts and culture sector, bringing his passion to life as a producer and curator collaborating closely with diverse musicians and artists from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. He has contributed to notable productions for renowned cultural and art institutions, including the Barbican and WOMAD Festival. Stefan's collaborative efforts extend to partnerships with NGOs and inter-cultural institutions in the UK, Europe, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
Stefan speaks Turkish, Azerbaijani, Persian, and Spanish and has working knowledge of Arabic (MSA) and Georgian.
